  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

Fort Lauderdale Rodent Removal Tip:

New York City's Rat Problem
It's no secret that New York is one of the most rat-riddled cities in the history of the world, more so even than London during the height of the plague epidemic. So we feel it's a worthwhile subject to sit down and talk a bit about why this is - why are so many rats flocking to The Big Apple? And what can be learned from New York's immense rat problem?

First things first: how big is a big rat problem?
For a long, long time, the exact rat count in New York remained rather understandably unknown, with legend claiming that the population of rats far outweighed the population of people in the city. However, in the past ten years, studies have approximated that the population of rats in the Big Apple equals about 24% of the number of people, which would mean roughly 2 million rats inside the city of New York alone. Still an astonishingly high amount, by anyone's standards.

Who are the main culprits?
It's all good and well to say New York has a worrying rat problem on its hands, but it's also worth noting what rats, in particular, we're talking about, since there are several species out there. Now, the most common type of rat in New York City is the Norway rat (also known as the brown rat). In general, this rodent can measure up to 50 cm in length (body and tail), and often weighs around 500 grams (with rare cases going all the way up to 1 kg). In spite of the name, the Norway rat can just as easily appear as gray, instead of brown, and tends to have a light-ish underbelly. More recently, it's also sometimes been referred to as "the New York rat" for rather obvious reasons.

What's the big deal with rats?
rodent trapping Sure, these 2 million rodents will occasionally climb up your drainpipe and make an unpleasant surprise inside one's home, but a large majority of them tend to prowl dumpsters and live in sewers, thus not obviously affecting one's day to day life. However, rats are highly dangerous to human beings, as well as to pets, since they carry loads of icky pathogens which can then result in disease, and potentially even death.

So it suffices to say you don't want rats inside your home or inside your city!

But what has caused New York's huge rat problem?
Why are rats attracted to the Big Apple more than anything else?

One of the main reasons why New York is overrun with rats is the curbside garbage disposal system that the city uses. It's quite common for residents to leave their trash on the street corner, to be picked up by garbage trucks. This may be handy for the residents, but it's also an open invitation to rats, especially since a lot of these garbage bags contain compost and edible leftovers, which the rats go crazy for.

Another important reason why New York is flooded with rats is the intense littering that goes on inside the Big Apple. Obviously, these rodents are mainly looking for two things: food and shelter. And with bits and pieces of food being made available at any street corner through littering, it's no wonder that rats think New York is such a swell place.

What can be done?
If you want to protect yourself or your neighborhood from rat infestations, you and your neighbors can make a conscious effort to reduce litter. You can also invest in special garbage bins that can't be overturned or easily opened, which will prevent the rats from getting to the trash.

While the rat problem that plagues New York is too big for an individual to tackle, you can make small steps as a community to reduce it.
